In our dear Lord's garden - Youlgreave Methodist Church, Derbyshire
#organ #churchorgan #pipeorgan
Me playing the organ at Youlgreave Methodist Church near Bakewell in the Derbyshire Peak District.
As we were in the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District, I thought the hymn "In our dear Lord's garden" would be an ideal choice so here it is to the tune 'Castle Eden' which I am playing from the old Methodist hymn book. Before that, to set the scene, there are some still shots of the beautiful countryside in this area.
Many thanks to the church officials for allowing me access to this splendid little instrument.

Sheffield was interestingly enough home to a masterpiece organ by Aristide Cavaille-Coll which was in the Albert Hall however the organ burned in the fire. Interestingly enough a copy was made of the organ for Baron Albert L'Espee for his French Chateau in Ilbarritz and that organ is now in Sacre Couer.

There's a fellow "castle clock" on the Crown Jewels house in the Tower of London. I've seen a Facebook video of the clock (which looks to be electric movement) but don't know where the 3 bells are . They must be on the roof or something like the bell on this one. Cool video!

If I'm not mistaken Manchester has an organ that was built by Aristide Cavaille-Coll. I don't remember if it's in the town hall or another building. But I've seen a video of a prominent British organist playing it (I think it was Andrew Lucas or John Scott one of those two). Sadly I've heard it's not yet in full working condition and they are trying to restore it.

That hour bell if I"m not mistaken is larger than Big Ben and has a deeper voice to it. If I remember correctly it filled in for Big Ben while Big Ben was silenced for repairs to the clock tower...

Did some research on this clock. The original movement was a John Whitehurst movement and then it was replaced by a movement by Harrison of Hull in 1843. Always awesome to hear the classic Ting Tang chime. I have actually been to a website that shows pictures of the bells.

Cornwall is also where the Cotehele House is. I've seen the mechanism from the 15th century but I've never heard it strike before on the bell above. Always nice to hear the Westminster chimes coming from a victorian era English clock we usually get the single hour bells or ting tang sometimes in the courthouses here. There's a video of a courthouse clock in Goshen Indiana sounding out the hour that's been running since 1870 and has the double three legged escapement that I made a few years back. Thanks for doing these clock videos I really enjoy them.

Gillet and Johnston makes some beautiful clocks! The one in the old city hall in Toronto has a nice ting tang chime to it and reminds me a little bit of St. Pauls Cathedrals chime. They named their bell Big Ben but the interesting thing is that it sounds more like Great Tom. Braintree's got a great Westminster Chime!

I think it would be cool to see videos of some of the older (17th century and before) clocks in England including the Combes Castle Clock and Cotehele House Clock and of them chiming. There is a single video online of the East Hendred 16th century clock chiming. It would be cool to see a video of that one as well. I'm into clocks and organs much like you are. Here in the United States during the victorian era we had clocks that were basically by two companies (E Howard and Seth Thomas) or at least those were the two big ones. Most of those only had single strike or occasionally you did get the ting tang or Westminster chime. English clocks it seems have always had a lot more variety both in the number of builders and a lot of the town halls it seems have Westminster or Ting Tang quarter chimes. Potts of Leeds was quite the clock builder as well. Englands got a lot more history it seems Americas only been around since like 300 years ago lol
